ELLEN sits on the ground, leaning against the end of a couch, sobbing into her arms. In one hand she holds a letter, the ripped-open envelope on the floor. She lifts her head—

ELLEN

Oh god. What am I going to do? I can’t believe…

She collapses into sobs once more. Enter GODMOTHER. She walks toward Ellen, watching sympathetically as Ellen cries.

ELLEN

There’s nothing left to believe in… not anymore. Nothing…

Godmother slides onto the other end of the couch.

GODMOTHER

Nothing? Now, you really don’t believe that?

Ellen flinches, scoots back.

ELLEN

Who are you?!

GODMOTHER

I’m here to help you, dear. Come now, dry those tears, your Fairy Godmother is here!

ELLEN

Fairy… Godmother? Are you for real?

Godmother stands, offers her hand to Ellen. Ellen takes it.

GODMOTHER

As real as anything.

ELLEN

Holy shit.

GODMOTHER

Language, dearest!

Godmother leads her back to the couch. They sit.

GODMOTHER (CON’T)

See? No need to cry on the floor, my little Cinder-Ellen.

ELLEN

It’s just Ellen.

GODMOTHER

Whatever.

ELLEN

Oh my god. I’m so desperate I need an imaginary friend to help me out.

GODMOTHER

Hey!

ELLEN

Sorry. It’s just… (sniffling) Oh god, I don’t know what to do!

She falls against Godmother. Godmother is pleased; she hugs Ellen, rocks her gently.

GODMOTHER

There, there. Now, what is it? You can tell me. Is it a boy? Has your father forbidden you to see him? Is he forcing you to marry someone else?

ELLEN

No!

GODMOTHER

Is your father dead, then? Or maybe your mother? (hopeful)...Both?

Ellen shakes her head.

GODMOTHER

What about step parents? Or—oh! Is it a ball? I love balls! The dancing, the romance! And your dress, well… (plucking at the fabric) it definitely needs work. But that’s okay! Just give me three feathers, an 8-track, and a turnip, and you would be amazed—

ELLEN

It’s my student loans!

GODMOTHER

…what?
