HER NAME WAS LOLA
by Lauren Gorski
Characters:
Claire – Female – 20s – 30s
Bruce – Male – 20s – 30s
Setting:
Living Room
Lights up.
CLAIRE and BRUCE watch TV together on a living
room couch.
CLAIRE
Anything you want to watch, babe?
CLAIRE flick, flick, flicks through streaming options.
BRUCE is distracted on his phone.
BRUCE
Whatever you want; I don’t care.
CLAIRE
What about that new movie on Netflix?
BRUCE
It’s a little late to start a movie. What about Family Guy?
CLAIRE
I hate that show.
BRUCE
Whatever you want; I don’t care.
CLAIRE looks over at BRUCE, still on his phone.
CLAIRE
Are you talking to someone?
BRUCE
Yeah, one sec.
CLAIRE
Who are you talking to?
BRUCE
Nobody, one sec.
BRUCE types and then looks up.
BRUCE
Okay, so Family Guy?
CLAIRE
I said I hate that show.
BRUCE
I thought you used to watch it a lot growing up.
CLAIRE
My sister had the DVDs. Not me.
BRUCE
Okay, then pick something else.
CLAIRE
What is on your phone?
BRUCE
Don’t worry about it.
CLAIRE
Babe.
BRUCE
I’ll tell you later, okay?
CLAIRE
Babe.
BRUCE
I’m checking Nextdoor. Someone thought they found my cat at the shelter, but the coloring is different. I know, you don’t want to deal with it, but–
CLAIRE
You told me you had given up on the cat.
BRUCE
Why would I ever give up on finding my cat? Babe. It’s my cat. She’s basically my child.
CLAIRE
We’re moving in together at the end of the month.
BRUCE
Right.
CLAIRE
You know I’m allergic to your cat; can’t we just start our new life together on the right foot? You haven’t noticed in the last two weeks that I’ve never breathed better in your place? That’s all because the cat is gone.
