Who’s a Good Boy?

RUFUS – Dog – Male (40s+)

LENA – Female (50s+)

CHRISTINE – Female (20s+)

SETTING: Living Room.

LENA
Rufus! That’s my sock! What did I say about going through my clothes? We have a guest coming over any minute! This is no way to behave when I’m getting ready.

Rufus stops chasing his tail, and pouts, ashamed.

LENA
Oh, now you know I can’t stay mad at you for too long. Come here, boy!

Rufus wags his tail; Lena gives him the scratches behind the ears–and hits the spot!

LENA
Oh, yeah. That feels good huh?

Rufus nods.

The doorbell rings.

LENA
Oh, that’s her! Outside Rufus. Go! Out!

Rufus barks. Lena leads him as they exit.

The doorbell rings again. Lena reenters, quickly applying a little last minute blush.

LENA
I’m coming! I’m coming.

Lena answers the door to CHRISTINE.

LENA
Christine, welcome, come in! It’s so wonderful you’re here.

CHRISTINE
I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to visit the infamous Lena DelChairo’s house of wonders.

LENA
(laughing) All just office gossip.

CHRISTINE
That spread to the Daily Mail.

LENA
They pay better than TMZ.

CHRISTINE
Well, it’s more beautiful than the pictures. (points to a piece of art) Is that a Rothko?

LENA
Funny story. I was at an auction in New Guinea, actually hated the piece, but there was this asshole at the auction that kept trying to outbid me.

Christine continues to explore the pieces around the room, taking off her coat. Lena hands her a cup of coffee from the table.

LENA
Christine, how long have you worked for Symbiotic Cosmetics?

CHRISTINE
Almost a year.

LENA
A year. A year. And ever since you’ve been in the office–I can tell that’s not the place for you. A stuffy, corporate building? You, who appreciates art and music and who initiated the office show-off-your-pet email thread? You’re a go-getter.
